In November 2011, I decided to make a change and cut the cord. The result has been more money, more time, and less noise in my household. It wasn’t easy, but it is something that I would recommend to others. getting rid cable TV

What I am talking about is getting rid of cable TV.  Now that sounds radical but there are many practical reasons for doing so. Here are some of the reasons I decided to cut the cords:

  • Saving money on services.
  • Reduced time being passively entertained.
  • Become more selective in the information sources I use.
  • Starve liberal, legacy media outlets of revenue.

What I decided to do was get rid of my cable TV service, return my DVR, and purchase a Roku streaming device. For the first two years, I paid for Netflix so I could watch movies and TV series when I wanted to. I eventually decided to get rid of Netflix and pocket the $8/month because they didn’t have much of the content I was interested in. Currently, I have about a dozen channels on my Roku that allow me to be informed (Weather Underground and Wall Street Journal) and entertained (History and YouTube) for a fraction of what I was paying three years ago. Plus, I can prevent a lot of leftist garbage being streamed into my house by not subscribing to the offending sources.

So why do I write about this on a blog focused on preparation? All of us have a limited amount of time, money, and attention that we can expend on various activities. For many people, idle entertainment consumes a great deal spare resources that could be used on more important matters. Over the last three years I have saved over $2500 and hundreds of hours by getting rid of cable, which has allowed me to become better prepared as well as better informed. Cutting the cords is a big step but it may be an action worth considering to free-up resources that can be used to improve your preparation.

…or you could just flop down on your couch and watch another re-run. Your choice, decide what’s important.
