I don’t think anybody could have predicted the civil unrest that broke out recently in Ferguson, MO but it did happen. Within hours, peaceful protests turned violent and some people committed crimes as order broke down. It shows how tenuous order is in some communities and how quickly the situation can change.
The most important realization is that civil unrest can break out quickly in any neighborhood. Its important to prepare for it beforehand by:
- Developing good situational awareness. Know what is going on around you to avoid dangerous situations if possible and extricate yourself from them if necessary.
- Having appropriate everyday carry (EDC) items on-hand. This includes items on your person, in your backpack, in your car, and in your office.
- Remaining informed via radio, social media (Twitter especially), and telephone if possible. Technology has made it much easier to know what is going on around you, take advantage of it.
- Keeping adequate supplies on-hand in case of service interruptions. This includes food, water, medical supplies, and other daily use items.
My hope is that justice is served in Ferguson, MO and that the people there can resume their lives in safety. No matter where you live though, its wise to prepare for civil unrest because it can happen anywhere at any time. When it happens, it will be too late to get ready so take the opportunity now to make your preparations.
