In case anybody needs a reminder about why bugging out may not be viable, I present to you a picture from my smart phone on Friday afternoon.

Arizona SR-87 at Milepost 220

This was around Milepost 220 in Arizona State Route 87 (or the Beeline as we call it) at about 4pm local time. Three miles ahead was a wreck that blocked both northbound lanes, behind it was a parking lot consisting of two parallel rows of vehicles ten miles long. The only motorized transport that was able to get through was a flatbed wrecker and a few motorcycles. Everybody else was going nowhere for over an hour.

Remember that this is on the Friday of a holiday weekend, not an emergency…

There are many in the preparedness community that advocate bugging out in an emergency. This assumes that one can get out of town before traffic builds-up and roads become clogged. Unless there are well-planned and managed evacuation routes, it may be impossible to bug out. Keep that in mind when making your plans.

Just a real-world example to think about.
