After my bike ride this afternoon, I had some thoughts regarding the importance of fitness to preparation.
I’ve made several comments on Twitter about why fitness is so important. When the unexpected happens, your body will be subjected to both physical and mental stress. Fit and healthy people will be able to handle this better than those who are out of shape. In certain situations, this could mean the difference between life and death. It won’t matter how much food, ammunition, and gear you have if your body isn’t physically prepared.
This means planning for fitness and wellness should be a part of everyone’s preparations. If you don’t have a fitness routine, consult with your doctor and other certified professionals to create one that works for you. Same for eating; meet with a registered dietician to create a healthy eating plan that works within your cultural and religious guidelines. Stay away from fads and gurus you see on TV, their purpose is to separate you from your money, not get you healthy.
There are a few habits you can change too that can help you slowly get in shape. Consider the following:
- Reduce/eliminate processed foods from your diet
- Substitute brown rice and whole grains for regular carbohydrates
- Reduce/eliminate soda pop from your diet, replace it with flavored teas
- Take more walks
- Consume water instead of sweetened drinks
- Incorporate some form of resistance training into your lifestyle, especially if your job is sedentary
- Get a bike and ride it!
- Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables
- Make your own meals, reduce the number of times you eat out
- Quit smoking
- Watch less TV
- Reduce/eliminate alcohol consumption
The fact is, most people are overweight and out of shape these days due to lifestyle choices. You can change that by making a commitment to yourself to get your body ready for the unexpected. It makes sense to keep your body well-tuned just like you would your automobile, tools, firearms, and other objects that you plan to use in an emergency. Think about how you can improve your fitness and start taking steps now.
Get fit and stay fit, your life depends upon it!
