A skilled mechanic knows how to select the right tool for the job. When it comes to battery-powered lights, there are a lot to choose from. But which ones should you own and why?
Here is a picture showing some of the battery-powered lights I own.

An assortment of lights
These include:
- Maglite® 5-cell D
-
Mini Maglite® 2-Cell AA (incandescent)
- Planet Bike rear light
- Serfas SL-One front light
- PrincetonTec Pular II LED keychain light
- Road ID Supernova
- Coleman 4AA Pack-Away® lantern
- PrincetonTec Fuel
So why do I own these particular lights? Each one serves a purpose that it is well-suited for, making it valuable. Plus, I prefer to purchase quality lights that will work when I need them to. This means selecting lights with a good design and manufactured with quality materials. The goal is to purchase units that will last for years and provide dependable service.
The lights I own fall into five categories:
- Hand-held Flashights – designed to illuminate a particular area
- Bike Lights – for safety when out hiking and biking
- Emergency Lights – activate when power is lost
- Lanterns – used to illuminate a room or area
- Headlamps – hands-free light
Some have secondary uses too. Hand-held flashlights can be used as a club due to their robust design. Bike lights can be used as a hand-held flashlight or signal if needed too. Most emergency lights can be unplugged from the wall and used as a hand-held flashlight as well. Plus headlamps can be used as a lantern inside a room or tent by turning the lights up.
This important because human beings need light in order to see. Battery-powered lights are the best way to provide illumination when there is insufficient light at night or during a power loss. Light means civilization and safety too, it indicates that there are other humans where it is present. In other words, don’t be left in the dark…have multiple light sources available!
In the coming months I am going to add new lights to my inventory and evaluate them. The good news is that there are a lot of great products out there that deserve consideration. For now, think about what kind of lights you need and decide which ones you need to purchase to fill in any gaps.
