Not long ago I installed a new garage door which was more secure than my old one. Not long after that, I decided to add another security feature to prevent break-ins via the emergency release mechanism. So now I am going to write a product review on The Garage Shield to add some additional information about the product.
I was looking for an effective way to prevent a would-be burglar from breaking into my house via my garage. It only takes a few seconds and simple tools for a thief to unlock the emergency release as this video shows. When I spoke with the makers of the Garage Shield, they offered to send one to me free of charge so I could evaluate it. A few days later, I received a package containing a brand-new unit.
Inside the box were these items:
Most of the parts are made from a rugged plastic that is both lightweight and strong. The metal parts include a clip and a screw that secures the unit to the J-arm of the garage door mechanism. The instructions are simple to understand and shows how to install the unit. I was able to do so in less than a minute, after I attached the metal clip.
For some reason, the metal clip that attaches to the mounting piece is the most difficult part of the installation. It was a challenge to snap on, eventually I got out my Leatherman Rebar and used it to get it mounted correctly. Once that was done, the rest of the installation was a snap. I didn’t have to use any of my tool, just my hands and a step ladder. Heck, if an IT Professional like me can install it, anybody can!
The Garage Shield is a simple product that is inexpensive (around $20) and easy to install. It helps prevent break-ins while maintaining the functionality of the emergency release mechanism. I also like it because it is Made in the USA out of recycled materials and benefits disabled Americans. It is one of those brilliant product that meets a need for a low price, I would highly recommend this to anybody with an overhead garage. Check the manufacturer’s FAQ for compatibility before you buy.
Pros: Easy installation and elegant design, no tools or mechanical skills needed to install it.
Cons: Metal clip was difficult to attach, it’s also not compatible with all types of garage doors.
Overall Rating: 9/10
