Mag Instrument has been manufacturing high-quality flashlights in the USA since 1979 and have a wide range of products.  They started manufacturing the Maglite Solitaire keychain light back in 1988 and its been very popular.  I’ve owned a couple myself and thought a review would be in order.

Maglite® Solitaire®

The body of the flashlight is made from an aluminum alloy, meaning it is strong and durable.  Mag uses O-rings to keep the light water resistant and there is a solid feel to this little flashlight.  The beam is adjustable by turning the front of the unit and it easy to carry because of its small size.  Like all Mag lights, its made in the USA and is popular amongst military and law-enforcement units.

That said, there is one major area where the Maglite Solitaire falls short.  The light output from its incandescent bulb just isn’t bright enough (2 lumens) to make it really useful.  Sure, the light output is enough to perform simple tasks but as a tool it suffers because it doesn’t offer enough illumination.  I have mine on my keychain but will retire it once I have found a suitable replacement.

Pros:  Durable construction and relatively low price

Cons:  Low light output compared to LED models of similar size

As a light, the incandescent bulb version of the Maglite Solitaire doesn’t offer much other than quality construction and a long lifespan.  My recommendation is that you forgo this version and get the LED one instead.  This is exactly why I am going to do in the next week or so, which means there will be a review for that one in the future.

Overall Rating:  4/10
