Even if you don’t smoke, you should have a few lighters on-hand for emergency use. The Zippo Windproof Lighter is one that I purchased a while back so I thought now would be a good time to share my impressions of this iconic product.

Zippo Windproof Lighter
I’ve owned torch-style butane lighters for years and used them on many camping trips. However, I decided to give the classic Zippo Windproof Lighter a chance since they are renowned for their durability and reliability. After all, a Zippo is small brass piece of Americana that anybody can own.
When I got mine, I was surprised at how small it was. The lighter itself features a wick, perforated wind screen, and ignition wheel that enable it to stay lit in windy conditions. This simple design has been popular for over eighty years because it works well in almost all climates. Finding fuel, replacement wicks, flint wheels, and other components for this lighter is no problem either since many stores have sold them for decades. So you would think this would be the perfect lighter to own…
Well, not quite.
You see, the Zippo Windproof Lighter has one big problem. If you don’t use it regularly and live in a dry climate, the fuel will evaporate fairly quickly. This can really be a problem when you need to light a fire and all the fuel is gone. While its easy to refill, doing so may not be an option during an emergency. For me, this was very irritating since I had to refuel this lighter before I could use it. Granted, I don’t use the lighter regularly because I don’t smoke and only have to light fires occasionally. However, in an arid climate like Arizona, this can be a real problem.
Pros: Classic design, durable, replacement parts and fuel relatively easy to obtain.
Cons: Fuel dries up fairly quickly if not used regularly.
While I am glad I purchased one, the Zippo Windproof Lighter will not be a primary ignition source for me. It will be a backup item, more of a curiosity and cool trinket than anything else. More than anything, I want to love this product yet because of its shortcomings I really can’t recommend it over other, more modern designs.
