A while back, I wrote about the importance of having a safe room in your house. One question that comes up is what items should be in your safe room?
Here’s what I have in mine:
- Mossberg 500 Shotgun (in “cruiser ready” condition)
- Maglite® 5-Cell D (incandescent)
- Mini Maglite® 2-Cell AA (incandescent)
- Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM/SW Radio
- Leatherman PST®
- Sabre pepper spray
- Slugs (5)
- Shot (20)
- ETON Solarlink FR-360
- USB cable
- Spare cell phone (charger not shown)
- Datrex water pouches
- Datrex food rations
I have my shotgun mounted on a Gun Grabber and the big Maglite is mounted upright on C-clamps. The rest of the items are within arm’s reach so I can quickly grab them. To ensure everything works properly, I check the batteries on the radios and flashlights on a quarterly basis. I also turn the radios on and ensure the spare cell phone gets a signal when activated. Whenever I leave the house, I activate the electronic deadbolt to secure everything. The one item that is missing is a first aid/trauma kit. I am going to address this soon because I want to have the means to treat gunshot and stab wounds. That said, I feel pretty good about what I have on-hand in my safe room.
My earnest hope is that I never have to use these items in an emergency. However, if it becomes necessary I will have the means to handle a variety of situations. How does this compare to your safe room?
