I decided to upgrade my safe room door a while back and was finally able to do so. After all, I have several items in that rooms that I want to protect and adding a stronger door would help accomplish this goal. So here is what I did to make my safe room more secure.
The first thing I did was order a solid door. Almost all interior doors have a hollow core for both weight and cost reasons. However, to make a door more resistant to forced entry one needs a solid-core door. I also opted to replace the frame and jamb since this would make the installation more robust. This cost more but I figured the integrity of my safe room was worth it.
The second thing I did was change the direction the door swung. The original door opened in to my safe room, I decided to have it open outward instead. Outward opening doors are impossible to kick in because…they only swing out. This had the additional benefit of making my safe room seem more open, it has more usable space now that the door swings the other way. My Kwikset digital lock and EZ Armor completed the installation.
This installation will make it more time-consuming for a thief to break into my safe room. Burglars want to get in, grab what they can, and get out before anybody realizes something is wrong. Anything that can slow him down will increase the likelihood that he will flee and attempt to find another, easier target. Consider adding a solid safe room door as another layer to your home’s security, one that will further harden your home.
