The recent Kunming railway station terrorist attack in China shows that determined attackers will use any weapon they can find to harm innocent people. Even in a communist country like the PRC, terrorists can still strike with deadly results.

It should come as no surprise that the Uighur terrorists attacked unarmed civilians. As Neo-neocon wrote:
…a violent group determined to wreak havoc on a disarmed populace can do it without guns.
This incident highlights a few actions you can take to become better prepared in the event of an attack. Whether its a crazy person lashing out at a bus station, a deranged gunman at a mall, or an organized terrorist attack, there are a few things you can do beforehand that can increase your chances of survival. Here are some steps you can take to become better prepared for such an event:
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times. This is perhaps the most important thing you can do, pay attention to what is going on around you. Keep an eye out for emergency exits, places to take cover, and possible escape routes. Also, watch people to see if anything seems out of place. Being observant is an important skill to develop, start getting in the habit of looking around wherever you are to increase your situational awareness.
- Equip yourself with Everyday Carry (EDC) and other gear when you are out and about. Even a few helpful items can make a difference during and after an attack. Check out this blog for ideas and inspiration, also give thought to what first aid supplies you can carry as a part of your EDC.
- Arm yourself within the limits of the law. This doesn’t just mean firearms; it can include knives, multitools, sturdy flashlights, pepper spray, and other defensive tools. Being armed means you can protect yourself to some degree, thereby increasing the chances of survival. However, carefully consider what weapons you are allowed to carry and which ones you can use effectively. Being armed is a responsibility that should not be undertaken lightly.
- Get training and practice. Learn how to become more observant, take a first aid class, research what EDC items are best for your needs, learn unarmed combat, become fit enough to run from danger, take realistic firearms training classes, but most of all seek to improve your knowledge on a regular basis. Human being have survived and thrived because we are an adaptable species, use that attribute to your advantage!
Remember that bad things like terrorist attacks can take place anytime, anywhere, and without warning. The good news is all of us can learn and equip ourselves to mitigate the impact of these events.
